Police, fire agencies roll with simulated quake (California)
Orange County emergency workers found themselves without power or phones this morning in the opening moments of the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history.
The problems only mounted from there as Sheriff's deputies, firefighters and transportation workers tried to imagine what would happen if a deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake ripped across Southern California.

Hamfest is a great place to learn about radios (Ohio)
Amateur radio enthusiasts filled the old Alverda Reed Elementary School gymnasium to purchase equipment, participate in raffles, eat great food, and meet with friends during the Grant Amateur Radio Club's 15th annual Hamfest Saturday, Nov. 8.

CQ Communications Acquires WorldRadio Magazine
CQ Communications, Inc. has acquired WorldRadio magazine, CQ Publisher Dick Ross, K2MGA and WorldRadio Publisher Armond Noble, N6WR, announced jointly today. CQ, based in Hicksville, New York, currently publishes CQ Amateur Radio, CQ VHF and Popular Communications magazines.

IBM Hooks Up Rural Area for Broadband, Ham Radio Leery
One of the big impediments to serious implementation of downloadable HD content has always been broadband availability. Most of the pundits against streaming media use this as their primary criterion. IBM has taken up the mantel of "broadband over power lines" that has been tried many times in the past and failed. This could be the solution to getting broadband to people that not only don't have access, but live in areas where the big broadband providers will not spend the money to build the infrastructure because of the lack of population density.

Guelph honours its heroes
The crackling signal cleared and after several attempts to connect, Linda Willis smiled when a man named Pat replied to her radio call.
Minutes before, Willis, a member of the Guelph Amateur Radio Club, had broken the two-minute Remembrance Day silence by reading In Flanders Fields, penned by Guelph-born Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in 1915. For the past 20 years, the club has marked the end of the First World War at McCrae House on Water Street.

IBM to help build broadband network in power lines
IBM Corp. is throwing its considerable weight behind an idea that seemed to have faded: broadband Internet access delivered over ordinary power lines.
The technology has been around for decades, but most efforts to implement the idea on a broad scale have failed to live up to expectations.
